A sungura gospel single, Mwari NdiMwari, that was released recently by Alaska-based musician, Jonathan Siasitumuzira, who is known as Mr Chinhoyi by his legion of fans, explores prayer and supplication from another perspective.

Recorded at Stumu Records in Chinhoyi, Mwari NdiMwari is a track in which the 47-year-old singer praises God and the power He has in transforming people’s lives.

But then, Mr Chinhoyi – who is also known as Madzibaba Gina – getting to God cannot happen if people do not know their roots.

“Mwari ndiMwari anotichengeta murudo

Kuti uzive Mwari, Ziva dzinza rako

Kuti uzive Mwari kudza dzinza rako”

Mr Chinhoyi is a leader with the Johanne Masowe eChishanu apostolic sect says in the song that reaching God happens through parents, then ancestors, angels, to Jesus Christ before finally getting to God.

“Kuti usvike kuna Mwari zvinotanga vabereki,

Zvozoenda kuvadzimu, zvozoenda kungirozi,

Zvozoenda kuna Jesu, zvozoenda kuna Baba”

The singer says he draws inspiration from sungura maestro Alick Macheso and Nicholas Zakaria, whom he says contributed a lot in getting his music business off the ground.

Mr Chinhoyi, who also owns Stumu Production Studios, said his music journey started after he inherited an acoustic guitar from his father, John, who passed on in 1988.

“My father left me the guitar, and this spurred me to pursue music as a career,” said Mr Chinhoyi.

The singer said he assembled a band called Soko Stars with which he started performing in Karoi and Marondera, before moving back to Hurungwe District. There he settled at Mulichi Business Centre where he grew into a distinguished entertainer.

Mr Chinhoyi is one musician who has found time to room his sons in his art. 15-year-old Sogani is not only a producer but a dancehall musician while Cindredgie, who is only seven years old, has a gospel album titled Ndomurumbidza, under his belt.
