In just under half a year, the 22nd Chinese medical team stationed in Zimbabwe has provided treatment to more than 7,000 patients across the country.
The team, made up of 11 specialists ranging from neurology to orthopedics, has conducted free medical consultations and performed over 200 surgeries since their arrival in March, according to an interview with Xinhua in Harare on Sunday.
“Some people in rural and remote areas have little access to proper medical services. That is why we make the effort to reach them with voluntary consultations,” said Zhang Xiong, an orthopedic specialist on the team.
Beyond surgical work, the doctors also provide free weekly outpatient services at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Center at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
Zhang explained that many patients suffering from chronic illnesses have turned to TCM therapies, appreciating their affordability and safety.
“Local patients are beginning to recognize the value of TCM for managing certain conditions,” Zhang said.
Neurologist Gao Juhua highlighted that high blood pressure and diabetes are widespread among Zimbabweans, yet many patients are unaware of their conditions.
“The free clinics give them a chance for proper checkups, and we advise them on taking medication correctly and making healthier lifestyle choices,” Gao noted.
The mission extends beyond patient care. The Chinese team has also been running training programs for local doctors and nurses, equipping around 100 Zimbabwean health workers with advanced medical skills and knowledge so far.
Li Jie, a respiratory physician from Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital, explained that the hospital has partnered with PGH since 2022 on a respiratory and critical care project. Thousands of Zimbabweans have received treatment through this initiative, which also enables visiting Chinese experts to strengthen PGH’s capacity by continuously training local staff.
Since 1985, China has sent 22 medical teams to Zimbabwe, playing a vital role in supporting the country’s healthcare system and improving access to medical services.
