China used the 98th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army to reiterate its deep commitment to peace and global cooperation—with Zimbabwe singled out as a steadfast partner.

Speaking at a well-attended reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Harare on Thursday, Ambassador Zhou Ding hailed the PLA’s legacy not only as a protector of Chinese sovereignty but also as a guardian of international peace. Senior Colonel Wang Zhenyu echoed this message, stressing the PLA’s role in UN peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, and anti-piracy operations.

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Defence, Hon. Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, represented by Air Marshal Jacob Nzvede, commended the PLA’s contribution to decolonization efforts and China’s growing involvement in Africa’s security architecture. “The PLA has become a force for peace and harmony across the globe,” she said.

This year’s celebrations come weeks after China spearheaded the creation of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong—a diplomatic milestone that underscores Beijing’s dedication to soft power in addressing global disputes.

With Zimbabwe marking 45 years of diplomatic ties with China, both countries reiterated their shared vision of “development-driven peace.” The event highlighted growing defense cooperation, including training, equipment sharing, and capacity-building aligned with Africa’s own aspirations for conflict prevention and continental stability.
