The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency has released The Quality Labour Force Survey for the 2022 fourth quarter, which shows that of the 9 175 641 working age population, a total of 3 122 352 people were employed.
This is relatively lower than the 3 125 361 employed people for the third quarter.
The national unemployment rate for the working age which is 15 years and above was recorded at 19.1 percent which is 738 721 compared to 20.1 percent for the third quarter.
According to ZimStat, employment in the informal economy covers two concepts, informal sector and informal employment.
“Employment in the informal sector is determined by the characteristics of the enterprise in which a person is employed.
“Informal employment includes the following jobs: own account workers and workers employed in their own informal sector enterprises, unpaid contributing to family workers irrespective of whether they work in formal or informal sector enterprises and paid employees not entitled to any,” ZimStat said.
Manicaland had the highest unemployment rate for males with 22.6 percent while Matabeleland North had the highest unemployment rate for females with 32.9 percent.
Bulawayo had the highest labour force participation rates with a total of 63 percent, males dominating with 71.6 percent compared to 55.7 percent for women.
Harare was recorded in second place with 60.9 percent with 71.6 percent while 51.0 percent for females.
Masvingo Province had the lowest labour force participation with a total of 23.5 percent with men on 30.9 percent and women registering 18.1 percent.
In the quarter under review, Mozambique had the highest number of labour migrants in the country, accounting for a total of 45.2 percent.
