The People’s Republic of China has pledged to deepen cooperation with Zimbabwe in the media sector and other key areas of economic development as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.

Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, said his country fully supports Zimbabwe’s national media policy, which seeks to promote factual, verified, and reliable information.

Speaking after paying a courtesy visit  on the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, Ambassador Zhou described media cooperation as critical to building stronger ties between the two nations.

“The media sector plays a very important role in bridging the two countries, the two cultures, and the two peoples,” said Ambassador Zhou.

He said Zimbabwe’s new national media policy aligns with global efforts to promote professional journalism and information integrity, adding that China stands ready to support the initiative.

“Zimbabwe has just launched a national media policy aimed at promoting true journalism to ensure the Zimbabwean people have access to factual, verified, and reliable information. China, the Chinese government, and the Chinese people wholeheartedly support this initiative,” he said.

Ambassador Zhou said China would continue to facilitate media exchange programmes, training workshops, and capacity-building initiatives for Zimbabwean journalists.

“In recent years, hundreds of media practitioners from Zimbabwe have visited China to participate in various seminars, workshops, and training programmes, and we will continue to strengthen that cooperation,” he said.

Muswere said the visit by Ambassador Zhou was in line with the Second Republic’s foreign policy thrust of engagement and re-engagement, adding that Zimbabwe valued its longstanding partnership with China.

“This visit is in line with the government’s policy on engagement, and China remains an all-weather friend given its historical role and contributions during and after our liberation struggle,” said Muswere.

He said Zimbabwe and China had made significant progress in enhancing cooperation across different sectors, including media, infrastructure, and trade.

“We are working together to consolidate and enhance cooperation in the media and many other sectors of our economy, including rural transformation,” he said.

Muswere acknowledged China’s role in human capital development, modernisation of Zimbabwe’s media sector, and the broader goal of promoting national unity through accurate information dissemination.

“The cooperation we have witnessed between the People’s Republic of China and Zimbabwe, both in the private and public sectors, has helped in human capital development, modernisation of our media institutions, and building media-driven social unity,” he said.

The Minister said Zimbabwe would continue to align its cooperation with China to the broader Vision 2030 agenda and the Belt and Road Initiative, which offers opportunities for investment, trade, and technical exchange.

“China has made significant contributions in terms of investment, cooperation, and capacity building for the people of Zimbabwe. We will also work together to increase trade between our countries under the Belt and Road Initiative,” he said.

Muswere highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Hwange 7 and 8 power expansion and the construction of the New Parliament Building as examples of successful cooperation between the two nations.

“These projects demonstrate how our political cooperation is translating into tangible economic and technical development for the benefit of our people,” said Muswere.

Zimbabwe and China continue to enjoy strong bilateral ties, with both countries committed to strengthening cooperation in media, infrastructure, trade, and human capital development.
