Eleven schoolchildren from Katanga Secondary School in Manicaland have filed a US$110 000 damages lawsuit against ethanol producer Green Fuel and three of its security guards, after allegedly being brutally assaulted for picking sugarcane earlier this year.

The case, filed through Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, was lodged at the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The guards, identified as Makina Ngwenya, Benjamin Dube, and Munorwei Gomondera, are accused of carrying out the assault while on duty.

Lawyers Tonderai Sigauke and Peggy Tavagadza argue that the guards ordered the pupils, aged between 13 and 17, to lie on their stomachs before flogging them repeatedly with a switch on their backs and bodies.

One of the guards, Gomondera, allegedly filmed the assault, and the footage later went viral on social media.

According to court documents, the children sustained swollen backsides, were unable to walk properly for days, and endured severe pain, psychological trauma, and humiliation.

The lawyers are demanding US$10,000 in damages for each child, citing pain, suffering, and violation of dignity. They also want Green Fuel to issue a public apology to the victims, their families, and the Chisumbanje community.

The apology, they argue, should be published in a provincial newspaper, broadcast daily on Vemuganga Community Radio for five days, and displayed on Green Fuel’s social media platforms and notice boards for 14 consecutive days.

ZLHR further insists the company must commit to corrective measures to prevent future abuses by its security staff.
