Mozambique has closed its port of Beira as tropical Cyclone Freddy nears the nation’s southern region.

Beira is Mozambique’s second largest city by size and population and its port is located on the mouth of the Pungwe River.

Pungwe River’s source is in the eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe.

The port’s operator, Cornelder de Moçambique, said in a statement that all indications are that the cyclone will affect the city, adding that operations will resume once weather conditions improve.

“We appeal to our customers who may have trucks that are on route to the port of Beira to stay in safer places until the weather conditions improve,” Cornelder de Moçambique added.

Schools that lie mainly in the coastal provinces of Inhambane and Sofala have been closed as the areas are considered to be high risk.

Strong winds are being witnessed in areas where the cyclone is expected to make landfall.
