Zim triumph over Zambia in Afrobasket qualifiers

Zimbabwe Women’s basketball team defeated Zambia in their last game at the International Basketball Federation Women’s AfroBasket Zone 6 qualifiers in Bulawayo with a 67-47 victory.

Zimbabwe and Zambia will face-off for third place while Angola will battle Mozambique for the sole ticket to the women’s quadrennial finals to be held in July in Kigali, Rwanda.

In the match against Zambia, Happiness Maroto was the top scorer with 20 points while Yolanda also scored 15 points.

Mozambique retained their position after defeating Angola 74-73 to keep a perfect 6-0 streak.

Each of the two times they clashed during these Qualifiers, Mozambique emerged as the most victorious.

Italee Lucas led the charge against Mozambique as she was the lead scorer for Angola with 24 points.

Cristina Matiquite also lived up to the billing scoring 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Nadir Manuel grabbed 11 rebounds, more than anyone else on the court.

Mozambique finished the first quarter with a 4-point deficit (25-21), slowly built up and took the lead at half-time though it was only a 2-point margin (45-43).

And they sped up in front at the third quarter, finishing on a score of 14-9 with that 6-point margin, they let their defence down.

Angola entered into a scoring frenzy that saw them finish with 21-15.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is in second place with Zambia topping Group A and Mozambique are sitting third in the FIBA men AfroCan qualifiers in July.
