The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade says the coming to Zimbabwe of envoys from the United States and Russia on the same day – Wednesday - testifies to the engagement and re-engagement processes the country has committed itself to since the emergence of the Second Republic.
“It is fact that there are ongoing official talks between us and the US with an aim to mend relations and, on the other hand, we have always been allies with the Russia. We are a friend to all and an enemy to none and this (visit) is an indication that we can engage anyone,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry has said.
Spokesperson for the Ministry, Livit Mugejo, was responding to Zim Now on speculations awash on social media and some news sites on the ‘coincidental’ visits to Harare by the US Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of African Affairs, Robert Scott, and Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Economic Affairs for Sverdlovsk Region Yarin Vyacheslav at the same time.
“It is not about their arrival at the same time that should be read into that much, but rather, the expectations and outcomes from the visits. In fact, Mr Scott was scheduled to have arrived in Zimbabwe yesterday, Tuesday February 28, but there has been a change of his itinerary.
Relations between the US and Russia are at a nadir over the Ukraine conflict.
