The Lions Club of Chiredzi has come to the rescue of a Zaka woman, Muchanyara Munodya, who lost both hands to a cackle of hyenas in July last year, when they handed over prosthetic hands to her.
The Lions Club also donated groceries to the hyena victim.
Munodya, of Mapfumo Village, Chief Bota in Zaka, Masvingo Province had both hands mauled by hyenas when she followed her husband Robert Maroi, after he had gone out of their bedroom at night to check on noise that was coming from outside.
They were both attacked by the hyenas with Maroi losing three fingers while his father was also attacked by the carnivores.
The hyenas only ran away after Munodya’s 10-year-old son hit one of them with a piece of zinc metal.
Munodya had given birth a few days before the attack and was detained for treatment at Masvingo Provincial Hospital for several months.
With the prosthetic hands, Munodya will be able to do perform some chores, including eating on her own, nothing and cleaning.
Speaking during the function at Camp David Lodge, Health Promotion Clinic Trust, medical rehabilitation practitioner, Bigboy Madzivanzira, who is also a member of Lions Club (Harare City) said Lions Club Chiredzi had approached his organisation for help after identifying the Munodya.
“Lions Club Chiredzi identified the hyena victim and approached my organisation and they paid all the expenses which are needed for installation of the artificial hands,” said Madzivanzira.
He said Munodya got the prosthetic hands for free from his organisation while Lions Club paid for the expenses for facilitation.
Lions Club president Stanley Chigwada, who also attended the event, said he was touched by Munodya’s plight, which he read about in the press.
“I was touched by Munodya’s plight when I read her story in the press and as Lions Club, since our duty is to serve, we saw it fit to restore hope to Munodya so that she can be able to work on her own,” said Chigwada.
Chiredzi District Development Coordinator Lovemore Chisema was the Guest of Honour at the event hailed Lions Club for their kindness.
