A delegation from Zimbabwe is attending the Global Investors Summit that started at the Andhra University Engineering College grounds in Visakhapatnam on Friday hopes to sign green power generation MoUs by the end of the visit.

“We are optimistic and hope to sign some MoUs before we fly back to New Delhi,” said Zimbabwe’s deputy ambassador to India, Peter Hobwani who is leading the delegation.

Hobwani flew down for the summit with a small team to explore partnership projects in green energy.

He said he is impressed with the Andhra Pradesh India energy department, attracting 35 investment proposals worth aroundUS$2 125 000).

He said Zimbabwe needs to double its current capacity.

“My country needs around 4 000 megawatts of power. But it produces only 2 240 MW through its lone hydropower project and four coal-fired generators. Only 79 percent of Zimbabwe’s population has access to power,” the deputy ambassador underlined.

The country is currently producing less than 1000 MW owing to low levels at Kariba Dam, and aged equipment at Hwange.

Zimbabwe has said it will promote energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and develop low-carbon infrastructure as part of its national climate change response policy.
