Communities in Mutare have been urged to be vigilant following reports of a confirmed cholera case in the eastern border city.
The City of Mutare yesterday afternoon said its health department is working on containing the reported case to prevent the spread of the diarrhoeal disease, adding that the public must seek medical attention and report to their nearest health facilities if they suspect cholera cases in their respective areas.
“Notice is hereby given that there has been a confirmed cholera case in the City of Mutare,” reads part of the statement.
Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease, which is caused by vibrio cholerae and is characterised by sever rice watery diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration.
The disease can be prevented by washing hands thoroughly with soap or ash under running water after using the toilet as well as before handling, preparing and eating food.
Other control methods include disinfecting drinking water by either boiling or use of water purifying tablets.
Mozambique and Malawi have recorded confirmed cases as well as deaths while the Mashonaland West town of Chegutu has also recorded a confirmed cholera case.
