Harare to review parking fines

Zim Now Writer

The Harare City Council has said it will next week review parking fines within the confines of the law.

This follows an outcry from motorists over Harare City’s parking fines and clamping fees. Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume said: “We have listened to what the motorists are saying, and we will reduce parking fines to levels that are reasonable in the current context.”

Mafume said motorists who do not have arrears exceeding five hours will just have to clear their arrears before they are clamped.

Recently, City Parking retained the US$132-dollar fine for clamped vehicles despite calls by the motorists to review he figure downwards.

However, it introduced a grace period for motorists to settle the required fee before being clamped as a way to govern parking in and around the Central Business District.

The reprieve period for motorists will be between 30 minutes to one hour after parking.

City Parking added that the grace period will also be extended to vehicles whose parking subscription has expired.
