Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Advocate Jacob Mudenda on Sunday met with Chairman of the State of Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Volodin Volodin, at the Second International Russia-Africa Parliamentary Conference in Moscow.

The Conference is running from March 18-21 under the theme ‘Russia-Africa in a Multipolar World’, placing the centrality of multi-polarism and preponderance over unipolarism.

Hon Mudenda and Chairman Volodin discussed various mutual issues affecting the two Parliaments in a bid to strengthen the existing fraternal relations which can be traced as far back as Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence.

Advocate Mudenda said Russia has always been a friend to Zimbabwe from the days of the liberation war when Russia supported the military struggle against colonialism through the provision of arms and moral support.

“The announced topics for discussion make us expect that this Conference will significantly advance understanding and strengthen relations between Russia and the countries of Africa.

“Such meetings will help share experience between the African states and the Russian Federation and develop solutions. There is also an exchange of views and development of positions on international security. You know, these issues are the most relevant now,” Advocate Mudenda said.

The Chairman of the State Duma also recalled that the Agreement on cooperation between the State Duma and the National Assembly of Zimbabwe was signed in 2022.

“Relations between our countries are developing dynamically, most of all because of a high-level dialogue between the heads of our states. It is important for us to provide legislative support to the decisions made at the highest level.

“So, it is very important to do everything to implement this agreement. We propose to create an inter-parliamentary commission which will enable us to work more substantively on issues that are our country stands for a multipolar world, for a just world order.

“Zimbabwe knows well about the sanctions, and this brings us closer. We should understand that by overcoming them, we become stronger,” chairman Volodin said.

The conference was attended by more than 40 delegations from African countries including Mali, Burkina Faso and Algeria.
