Munakandafa joins Basford on loan

Luther Munakandafa

Luther Munakandafa has joined Southern League Premier Division Central club Basford United on loan from Vanarama National League side Notts County until December.

This comes as consolation for the 18-year old after his disappointment in April when he went for trials at English Championship club Blackburn Rovers and played 79 minutes for their Under-18s in a 2-1 league defeat to Burnley, and didn’t get the deal.

The Zimbabwean joined Notts County’s youth set-up last year and immediately made his mark, earning himself the opportunity to train regularly with the first team throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

His performances in those sessions, coupled with his form for the under-19s, impressed the first-team coaching staff enough to give him the chance to progress. Munakandafa went on to sign a senior contract with Notts.

The teenager has represented Zimbabwe at various youth level games and was part of the Young Warriors U17 team that featured at the Cosafa tournament in 2020. He has also played for the English Colleges.

Munakandafa is one of 17 Zimbabweans players in various divisions of English football. The total number of players plying their trade outside the country is 93 with South Africa having the largest number of 19.
