A spate of vehicle thefts seems to indicate a pattern of thieves targeting Honda Fit vehicles left in overnight car parks.
Three Honda Fit vehicles were stolen in Bulawayo on one day, while two were stolen in Chitungwiza on different days, the police have said in a statement.
“In one of the cases, On March 17, police in Bulawayo recorded a case of theft of a Honda Fit, vehicle registration number, AEB 4619, which was stolen at a car park in Pumula East, after the complainant,24, had parked it for overnight safekeeping on March 16,” said the police in a statement.
“Similarly, on March 17, the complainant, 33, lost a Honda Fit registration number ADT 87124, he had Parked for overnight safekeeping at a car park along Third Street, Warren Park 1, Harare.
“On the same day, a Honda Fit vehicle, registration number AEV 5490, was stolen along Batch Street, between 10th and 11th Avenue, Bulawayo where the complainant,57, had parked it before going to work at Mhlahlandela Building, Bulawayo.
“In a related case, on March 18, a 39-year-old man discovered that a Honda Fit vehicle, registration number AFY 7901 had been stolen after parking it for overnight safekeeping at a car park in Manyame Park, Chitungwiza on March 17,” the statement reads.
Police in Seke are investigating a case of theft of a Honda Fit vehicle registration number AFA 5656, which was stolen while parked for safekeeping on March 20 at a car park at Murisa Business Centre, Seke.
Many vehicle owners, especially those who live in high density areas, tend to put their vehicles in overnight car parks which are supposed to be more secure than their yards.
Most car parks have secured perimeter fences and security guards on duty throughout the night with some having dogs as well.
“In another case, on March 18, a Mitsubishi Pajero, registration number ABE 7470 was stolen at Warren Hills Golf club, along Kirkman Road, Harare.
“The complainant had parked the vehicle and left the car keys under the driver’s seat cover as he went to the bar for refreshments,” police said.
The police are calling for information which may lead to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the stolen vehicles.
