A woman from Triangle in the Lowveld reportedly took her own life by drinking poison after her husband assaulted her continuously for four days, demanding US$250 which they were saving to buy a cow.
Masvingo assistant provincial police spokesperson, Lorraine Ndlovu confirmed the matter, saying the bruised lifeless body of the 41-year-old Kudzai Nyaku, was found in a bedroom with an empty bottle of Dichlorvos pesticide next to it.
Nyaku of Village 16 Chitava, Chabetura in Triangle was allegedly assaulted by her husband, Eriya Mbuluwa, 32, continuously from March 13-17, 2023. Mbuluwa allegedly wanted to squander the money with girlfriends.
Mbuluwa, Ndlovu said, returned home from a meeting on Monday last week and demanded the US$250 they were saving to buy a cow.
Nyaku refused to hand over the money, alleging that he wanted to spend it with girlfriends. This angered Mbuluwa, who assaulted Nyaku all over the body with a wooden stick.
He then took his wife and dumped her at his parents’ homestead in the same village on the next day, telling his father, Peter Chitsiku, 62, and mother, Martha Mbuluwa, 58, that he no longer loved Nyaku.
He, however, returned around 9pm on the next day and took Nyaku back to their homestead. Mbuluwa allegedly assaulted Nyaku along the way home.
When his mother came the next day to check on Nyaku, Mbuluwa told her that she had gone to the fields.
Mbulawa allegedly continued assaulting Nyaku, demanding the money but she refused to surrender it, threatening to commit suicide if Mbuluwa continued assaulting her.
She allegedly then later took Dichlorvos pesticide and died.
Mbuluwa told police that he had locked his wife in the bedroom and run away in panic.
His mother alerted the neighbourhood watch police when she failed to find Nyaku after she had gone to check on her again.
When police went to Mbuluwa’s homestead, they found it deserted but got information that he was at Chisase Business Centre where they proceeded and arrested him around 7pm on the same day before taking him to Triangle Police Station.
Police found Nyaku’s body in the bedroom with bruises all over her body and froth coming from her mouth while an empty pesticide bottle was found on the bed.
Her body was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
