The City of Harare says water purifying firm, Nanotech Solutions has started installing equipment to upgrade the Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant.
This will enable council to use cost-efficient water treatment chemicals.
Harare’s installation and maintenance manager, Engineer Edmore Chawasemerwa confirmed the progress saying the Nanotech Solutions deal for alternative water chemicals will save the City more than US$300 000 per month.
Nanotech operations manager Gideon Reyneke said: “We will upgrade the plant with disinfection and manufacturing answers, long term we will start addressing capacity at Morton Jaffray to increase it and look at reticulation to ensure that we are able to address the questions we have.”
An initial consignment of chemicals was delivered by the company, which is also implementing similar systems in Mozambique, South-Africa and Botswana, on Thursday.
Harare has been battling with erratic supplies of water to residents as water treatment chemical costs continued to spike on the back of rising US dollar/Zimbabwe dollar exchange rate.
