Number of spectators set to spike as PSL okays beer sales at stadia

Philemon Jambaya

The Premier Soccer League has approved the sale of alcohol at match venues.

This follows calls from different stakeholders, including fans to sell booze at stadia, but the move had for a long time been resisted by the PSL but it seems they have now given in to pressure.

Fans were now shunning watching live matches in stadia, arguing that there was no entertainment at stadia and they would rather watch English Premier League matches at different pubs while enjoying their booze.

However, beer has now been allowed at match venues and this was confirmed by PSL Chief Executive Officer, Kennedy Ndebele

“Following a Board resolution made at the Annual General Meeting held on 17 March, 2023 to allow alcohol sales at the stadia, clubs are advised to secure a written permission from stadium owners for the sale of alcohol.

“Clubs are further advised to get amended Lease Agreements that allow the sale of alcohol, police clearance from the Zimbabwe Republic Police as well as liquor licences from the Liquor Licensing Board.

“Clubs are also required to indicate where the alcohol will be sold at the stadium.

“Permission will be granted to clubs that fulfil the above requirements,” said Ndebele.

The move might see the number of fans increasing and they have been calls to come up with different initiatives to lure back fans at stadia.
