The African Union Disability Council Zimbabwe Chapter is launching a resource mobilisation campaign to support people with disabilities in Malawi who are among those affected by tropical cyclone Freddy.

This is in response to the international appeal for assistance that was made by Malawian President Dr Lazarus Chakwera after the cyclone created an unprecedented crisis in some parts of the country.

The donations will be handed over to the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Harare on April 22.

“More than 500 people have been killed, over 1,300 people have been injured, and more than 500 are still missing, with the number of displaced people being 553,164 staying in 543 camps set in different parts of Malawi.

“No donation is too small, we are mobilising wheelchairs, clutches, clothes, blankets and foodstuffs, sanitary pads, toiletries and or donation in cash.

“The world can be a better place if we show each other some love by coming together and supporting the survivors of this unfortunate disaster,” AUDC Zimbabwe said.

The World Meteorological Organisation has recorded Cyclone Freddy as the longest cyclone, which has left a trail of destruction and continues to cause extensive damage and loss of lives from torrential rains and strong winds in ten districts. These include Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Thyolo, Phalombe, Chiradzulu, Mwanza, Blantyre, Zomba and Neno.
