The Embassy of the Republic of Malawi is appealing for assistance from individuals or organisations of goodwill in material or finances to help people affected by Cyclone Freddy.

In a statement Ambassador of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Mwayiwayo M Polepole, said the donations are going to assist victims displaced by the cyclone.

“The Embassy of the Republic of Malawi has learnt with great shock and sorrow of the devastation caused by cyclone Freddy where lives of people and property have been lost. The Republic commends President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for declaring a State of Disaster in the ten affected districts.

“The Embassy is urging that all donations should be made through the committee that has been instituted at the Embassy.

“Due to the magnitude of the calamity and immensity of the exercise, all donated items are to be distributed within the shortest possible time after mobilisation and reports shall be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malawi and all donors.

“May the Good Lord bless you all in advance and also comfort the affected victims and may departed souls rest in eternal peace,” reads the statement.

All inquiries should be made to the Chair of the Committee, Major General Elias Mpaso, at +263781879761.

President Chakwera declared two weeks of national mourning after over 300 people were confirmed dead.

The cyclone destroyed millions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure and the country is yet to account for the socio-economic and humanitarian impact of the freak weather event.
