With the country gearing for the watershed harmonised elections penciled in for mid 2023, a rise in the cases of political violence may not be ruled out as evidenced by the appearance in court of a man who attacked a supporter of a political party and now faces assault charges.
Gilmond David, 44, of Mugutu Farm appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates' Court accused of assault.
The State through, Zororai Nkomo, alleges that on April, 2, 2023, David met with Dosman Pike who is the complainant in the matter and was wearing a Zanu-PF T-shirt. He ordered him to remove it, but the compalinant denied.
Later during the day, Pike met with David's son, Sharon David.
Sharon also asked Pike why he was still wearing the same T-shirt his father had told him to remove.
Sharon then kicked Pike who fell down. He took a half brick and struck Pike several times on the face.
David came on the scene and also striked Pike with a half brick on the face and kicked him once on the chest.
Pike sustained injuries on the face and was referred to the hospital.
Mangosi ordered David to pay ZWL$30 000 as bail to the clerk of court. He instructed him not to interfere with the witnesses in the matter and to report once every fortnight at Marlborough police station.
He will appear in court on June, 8, 2023 for routine remand.
