Zim swimmers US-bound

Zimbabwe swimmers Denilson Cyprianos and Brett Jones will be participating at the TYR Pro Series in Westmont, United States of America from April 12 to April 15.

Denilson will compete in the 100M and 200M Backstroke and Brett will compete in the 50M freestyle and 50M Butterfly.

USA Swimming is the official national organisation that selects and trains athletes for international competitions, including the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter said, “This is another exciting international swimming event that is coming to the FMC Natatorium in Westmont.”

Denilson Cyprianos in 2019 grabbed gold, beating his own national 100m backstroke record in the Hamilton Aquatics Summer Sizzler 2019 held on Friday and Saturday at Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai, UnitedArab Emirates.

He is also holder of the 50m national backstroke record of 28:49 seconds achieved at the Africa Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Youth Games in Botswana in December 2020 and beating Peter Wesler’s record of 28:59 seconds set in 2013.

At St. Ambrose, the political science student, Jones is a member of the record-holding 200m freestyle relay team (1:23:74) set in 2021 and earned an All-American honourable mention at the NAIA Nationals in 2022.

For this event, FMC Natatorium is expecting over 550 swimmers from 19 countries:
United States, Egypt, Israel, Canada, Croatia, Hungary, Chile, South Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Cypress, Mexico, Estonia, Uruguay, Lithuania Slovenia and Germany.

Meanwhile, Swimming Zimbabwe has announced the team to compete at the South Africa Senior National Swimming Championships in Gqeberha from April 12 to 16, 2023.

The 14-member team will be led by coach Masi Takaedza.
