One person has died following a stampede at the National Sports Stadium in Harare during the Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo soccer match on Monday evening, confirmed the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
The incident occurred at Gate Number Two at around 6:30 pm at the beginning of the match. Police said the incident involved a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian.
In their statement, ZRP said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that swift and compressive investigations are currently under way after a fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian at the National Sports Stadium where one person died during a stampede at gate number two at 1830 hours at the beginning of the soccer match between Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo,” the statement said.
The police expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured the public that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be investigated.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures the public of objective and compressive investigations to find out exactly what transpired,” the statement said.
Police said a detailed statement would be issued in due course.
