Man caught stealing NRZ equipment

Michael Mashiri

A suspected thief, who was stealing various pieces of equipment from the National Railways of Zimbabwe, has appeared in court.

Tatenda Gwekwerere, 33, was before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of theft.

The complainant in the matter is the National Railways Of Zimbabwe, represented represented by Bardon Redson, who is a Loss Control Officer at the parastatal.

The State alleges that on May 9, at around 1000 hours at the National Railways Of Zimbabwe yard in Harare, Redson was with his workmate doing some patrolling duties in that yard.

During the patrol, he observed Gwekwerere standing suspiciously which made him to give special attention on him.

Gwekwerere looked like he was collecting some railway property in the yard.

Redson then made an ambush and a surveillance on Gwekwerere’s movements and discovered that he would collect property when there is no one nearby but when there were people passing by, he would stand as if nothing was happening.

He then pounced and arrested him and found that he was holding 8 NRZ iron pins on his hands. They later recovered 1 brake block, one sole plate and 2 brake components near him which he was initially piling belonging to NRZ.

Gwekwerere was arrested and all the property was recovered valued at US$660.

He was remanded to June 14, for a trial date.
