President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted former Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) Deputy Director-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi to the rank of Major General in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

Tapfumaneyi, who previously headed the controversial Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) during the 2023 harmonised elections, received his new rank at a ceremony held at the ZDF headquarters in Harare on Friday.

The Commander ZDF, General Philip Valerio Sibanda, conferred the insignia and urged the officer to maintain exemplary conduct in his new role.

“Congratulations to you Major General Tapfumaneyi, and you are welcome back to the ZDF. We are looking forward to working with you,” Sibanda said.

In his acceptance speech, Tapfumaneyi thanked Mnangagwa for the promotion and acknowledged the support of the ZDF leadership.

“I am determined and committed to supporting the President’s vision and the Commander’s plan in defence of this country and making sure the country remains secure. I want to thank His Excellency for promoting me,” he said.

Tapfumaneyi has previously served in several high-ranking positions in government.

He was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs and was widely known for his role as FAZ head, a Zanu PF-aligned outfit that took centre stage in mobilising voters ahead of the 2023 polls.
