A-23-year-old pregnant woman and her 49-year-old father who are both Zimbabwean were discovered dead in separate incidents just days apart in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.
The local police have initiated a murder investigation into the matter.
The father and daughter resided together and operated a bakery on Hill Street in the university town.
On the evening of Sunday, May 21, police discovered the young woman’s body inside the bakery.
While there were no visible injuries, a bloodstain on her head raised suspicions.
Authorities remain tight-lipped about the identities of the deceased, withholding crucial information that could shed light on the case.
A week later, the body of the 49-year-old father was found hanging from a tree in the bushes near Worcester Street.
The circumstances surrounding these tragic deaths have prompted further scrutiny, compelling the authorities to conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the exact causes of their death.
The Zimbabwe Consulate in Cape Town and Zimbabwean authorities are deeply disturbed by this tragedy, as are the Zimbabweans residing in Makhanda.
Despite these revelations, Consul-General Esther Tonderai Mudambo, declined to comment, citing the need for permission from the deceased’s next-of-kin.
The Zimbabwe Migrant and Refugee Support Network in Gqeberha has expressed their shock and pledged to provide the necessary support.
ZMRSN secretary-general Shelton Chiyangwa stated that the organisation would offer psycho-social services to the bereaved family and explore options for financial assistance, including repatriation and burial arrangements.
