2 apply for Zifa Eastern Region administrator post

Two candidates have applied to fill the post of Zimbabwe Football Association Eastern Region administrator which has been vacant for three years.

The post fell vacant following the retirement in 2020 of founding administrator, the late Tedious Machawira.

This was disclosed by the Region’s deputy chairperson Wisdom Simba at the region’s Annual General Meeting that was held on Saturday at a local hotel that the interviews will be held in two weeks’ time.

Simba said only two candidates have submitted applications for the post.

“One of the issues we discussed was in regards to appointing an administrator for the region. We currently have two applications for consideration and we will hold the election in two weeks’ time.

“The delay in appointing an administrator is a result of numerous factor,s chief among them Covid-19. Machawira retired in 2020 and we could not promptly replace him,” said Simba.

Machawira assumed the reins of the region when it was formed in 2001 and retired from the powerful post in 2020. He died after a long battle with an undisclosed chronic ailment linked to dementia in October 2022.

The AGM was attended by the region’s secretariat, executive, referee representatives and Division One clubs with the exception of Ruwa FC and JM Busha.

The meeting also resolved that top-tier matches will be handled by inter-regional referees while low-tier matches will be handled by local referees, a resolution that came amid allegations that several teams are paying off referees to influence results.

Clubs which are yet to finish paying up their affiliation fees were given until mid-July to do so or have some of their matches suspended.

“We ironed out several issues with clubs. We discussed discipline and resolved that all clubs which have not fully paid their affiliation fees should have done so by mid-July. Should they fail, we will suspend some of their league matches,” said Simba.
