Police in Kanyemba have arrested nine people for killing a buffalo near Mariga Village on July 7.
In a statement the police said that the suspects axed the buffalo then shared the meat.
The African buffalo population is estimated at around 400 000 and “near threatened” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which determines the conservation listings for species. Buffalo numbers have been decreasing due to human settlement expansion as well as recurrent droughts due to climate change.
Buffalo meat is available in some Zimbabwean supermarkets, usually on tourist resort towns where game park operators or National Parks occasionally cull the animals or kill them when they attack humans or destroy crops.
