Police release names of 6 killed in Inyathi mine tunnel

Police have released the names of the six miners who died at Lilian Mine in Inyathi, Matabeleland North Province on August 3, 2023.

In a press statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident:

“The six victims have been identified by their next of kin as listed: Matthew Sibanda, 30, a male adult of Sesamba Village, Chief Madliwa, Nkayi, Bhekani Tshuma, 25, a male adult of Sibombo Village, Chief Mabhikwa, Inyati, Bruce Clive Tshuma, 21, a male adult of Matsholozane Village, Chief Tshugulu, Nkayi, Makhosana Sabelo Nkomo, 22, a male adult of Nkomo Village 2, Sikhali, Chief Mabhikwa, Lupane, Mangezi Mpofu, 23, a male adult of Mutshethe Village, Chief Madliwa, Nkayi and Ndabezinhle Bhebhe, 27, of Sesemba Village, Chief Madhliwa, Nkayi.”

The same mine witnessed a similar incident in September last year after a mine shaft collapsed, killing two people died and badly injuring three.

The ZRP implored mine operators to prioritise the safety of the workers at mine sites.
