Chinese companies hunt for locals to employ at upcoming job fair

Chinese companies in Zimbabwe searching locals to hire in various capacities will congregate at a job fair coming up this Friday and Saturday.

Co-hosted by Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe and the Chamber of Chinese Enterprises, the fair will be held at Stanbic Park Borrowdale and is aimed at creating employment opportunities and contributing to economic development.

“To that end, the two-day job fair is aimed at providing an opportunity for Chinese enterprises to hire local talent and pursue localized development,” Stanbic head for trade and Africa China Banking, Mr Tapuwa Nyika said.

The theme is : “Working together to boost the Zimbabwean Economy”.

“Stanbic Bank appreciates that Zimbabweans are not spared from the global economic downturn with the unemployment rate continuing to rise,” said Mr Nyika.

Chinese companies operate across all sectors in Zimbabwe and are among the companies with the largest staff complements in the country. The vacancies on offer include those for translators, drivers, welders, HR practitioners and other roles.

Chamber of Chinese Enterprises vice president Ms Shanel Liu said the organisation has several members and a number of them are involved in economically significant and national strategic projects.

These include Tian Ze Tobacco, which exports more than 40 percent of Zimbabwe’s tobacco to China.

There is also Sino-Hydro, the company that refurbished Kariba South Hydro Power Station and is currently upgrading Hwange Power Station, the development expected to add 600MW into the national power grid before year end.

China Jiangsu International is working on the Robert Mugabe International Airport expansion project which will see handling capacity of the airport shoot up from 2.5 million to 6 million passengers a year.

Others include Sino Steel (ZIMASCO), Tsingshan Group, Huawei and ZTE.

 “We have no doubt that the job fair will be pivotal in boosting the Zimbabwe economy because of the partnership with the Chamber of Chinese enterprises with whom we share the same belief that creating more and better-quality jobs is key to boosting economic growth, reducing poverty and that increasing social cohesion will assist business to grow in a healthy direction,” said Mr Nyika.

He said the fair will also better place local Chinese brand on the market as they exhibit what they offer in terms of products and services.
