A 19-year-old Botswana sprinter, Letsile Tebogo won a silver medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

Tebogo became the first-ever sprinter from the African continent to win a medal in the men’s 100m event.

He clocked 9.99 seconds in the race that was won by American Noah Lyles, who bagged the gold medal with a time of 9.83 seconds.

Africa’s biggest hopes were Akani Simbine of South Africa, Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya and the Botswana prince, Tebogo.

Simbine was disqualified in the semi-finals for a false start and Omanyala finished on position seven in the final.

Africa is well known for long distance races, particularly for runners from East Africa, but Tebogo broke the short distance race history with the silver medal for the first time at the World Athletics Championships since 1983.
