A homeless man collapsed and died along Julius Nyerere Way in central Harare mid-morning yesterday.

Eyewitnesses said the man, who is believed to be 54 years old, has been living in the streets.

Caleb Mbofana, who arrived at the scene said that Tendai Givemore Makoni was his friend.

“I was friends with Tendai Givemore Makoni, from Tsanzaguru in Rusape, Manicaland Province. We happened to have come from around the same place. I come from Inyati Mine, Chinyika West in Rusape.

“Last night, we slept together at a place called London at the Parkade along Samora Machel Avenue. Tendai complained of heart pain and I actually tried to call a doctor who once helped me since I had his number, but could not get through.”

Mbofana told Zim Now that Makoni had breathing problems in the night and he, Mbofana, offered to take the deceased to hospital in the morning.

“However, Tendai said he would go to the New Start Centre first. He woke up very early and went there. Then later I heard people saying there is someone who had collapsed, only to find it is my friend. It is so painful,” said Mbofana.

Mbofana said Makoni’s brother had since been informed and was on his way to Harare from Rusape.

Police attended the scene and ferried the body of the deceased to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary.
