Mpilo doctor apartments refurbishment almost complete

Doctors at Mpilo Central Central hospital can expect to move into their new apartments by year end, authorities have said.

"Refurbishment works at the three Mpilo Central Hospital Doctors' apartments that previously got burnt in 2018, 2019 and 2021 are almost complete and the facilities will be reopened this year," announced the Ministry of Health Child Care on its Twitter handle today.

39 staff members and their families were affected in 2021 fire that damaged property in the region of US$500 000, leaving many occupants with just the clothes they were in at the time.

Some people were forced to jump out of the building through the windows to escape the fire as it had blocked all entry and exit points.

One person sustained a broken ankle and another smoke inhalation effects.

Sparks from an electricity distribution box were cited as a possible source of the fire at the time.

In 2019, a heater left on overnight set off a fire in an apartment.

In 2018 another caused damage worth nearly US$300 000.

Mpilo Central Hospital 'Mpilo' meaning life has around 1000 beds and is the largest in Bulawayo and second largest in the country after Parirenyatwa Hospital.

The hospital services most of the southern parts of the country.
