Toll Free Platform Introduced To Curb Sexual Harrassment Among Female Students

The Female Students Network Trust (FSNT) has launched a toll free number for female learners to allow them to report cases of sexual harassment freely. The number will allow students to get information on elections, Sexual Rights and Reproductive Rights.

In Zimbabwe, there is scant legislation that effectively addresses the problem of sexual harassment in tertiary and educational institutions as well as at workplaces.

The FSNT Advocacy and Communications manager, Norbert Kuvamudiki, said the toll free number serves as a safe space for female students to enquire about Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) as well as electoral processes.

"We have established an Econet toll free number for female students to conveniently report cases of sexual harassment so that they can be assisted and also enquire information on SRHR and elections through the same platform.

"The prime aim is to enhance female students’ participation in the SRC (Students Representative Council)  and beyond by tackling sexual harassment in tertiary institutions which has been noted to be the chief barricade  for them rising into echelons of power,” Kavamudiki said.

In July 2022, the government through the Public Service Commission launched a Public Service Sexual Harassment Policy towards eradicating sexual harassment in the work space and inclusive public service.

In Nigeria, president Muhammadu Buhari on 4 October 2022 said sexual harassment has reached unspeakable levels in universities there, with "sex for grades" becoming a common way of how the child would attain better graded as lecturers intensify preying on female students.
