South African authorities have barred a planned protest march that had been set for Beitbridge Border Post by the Progressive Zimbabweans in South Africa living in South Africa.
Musina head of courts, TJ Davhana wrote in an October 2 letter to Progressive Zimbabweans in South Africa:
“Kindly take notice that permission to have a peaceful protest march on the 26th October 2023 at Beitbridge Border Post starting from 10:00am until the 14:00 is hereby withdrawn with immediate effect.”
Davhana added that the protest was effectively off on the South African side.
The PZSA were threatening to shut down the Beitbridge Border Post to pressure Zimbabwean authorities into calling for new elections.
This push comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa won the presidential election held on August 23.
The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change led by Nelson Chamisa refused to accept the results, alleging Mnangagwa and Zanu PF had rigged the poll.
