Zimuto High School students have travelled to Lome, Togo to face off with other African students in the Pan-African Universities Debating Championship.
The Reformed Church in Zimbabwe-run school team failed to travel to Tanzania for the same competition in 2022 after failing to raise adequate sponsorship.
“Great assistance has come from former students such as Dr Johannes Marisa, who has done uncountable developments at Zimuto, including installing an electric borehole and construction of a state-of-the-art accommodation block for girls; Dr Chagonda, Geologist Musadaidzwa and Gay Kanonge to mention but a few,” said Zimuto High head, Harris Mashava during the send-off ceremony held at a Harare hotel recently.
PAUDC is held with four teams of two people in each debate and is the biggest intercollegiate debate championship in Africa, established in 2008 by the University of Botswana Debate Masters Association.
“Participants are, Zimbabwe Child Parliament vice president, Theophilous Beans, Child Parliamentarian Nicole Jirivengwa, Solace Zunza and Vespasian Makadho, all sixth formers.
“I am totally convinced that our Zimbabwe pupils from Zimuto High School are going to raise the Zimbabwe flag high,” said Elder Taurayi Mukumbiri Magunda.
Mashava said prominent former students from Zimuto include former minister Mike Bimha, Attorney-General Virginia Mabhiza, Dr Marisa, Dr Chagonda, Tawanda Fushai (pilot), Advocate Tapiwa Muchineripi and Alex “Mashwede” Mashamhanda.
Mashava said Theophilus Beans has also designed an electronic walking stick for the visually handicapped.
“Zimuto is among four schools that are to receive an international award, The Zimbabwe Community Trailblazers Award this coming January, 2024,” said Mashava.
