Man dupes business partner

Michael Mashiri

A man, who defrauded his partner US$17 000 which was meant for a mining business, has denied bail.

Freddy Makuvise, 68, of Marlbrough, appeared before magistrate Apolonia Marutya, at the Harare Magistrates' Courts charged with fraud.

The complainant in this matter is Wilson Nharingo.

The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that in November 2011, Makuvise went to Nharingo with an idea of venturing into a mining business.

It is alleged that he lied to Nharingo that he had a mine in Chegutu as a way of luring him.

Makuvise allegedly said since he owned a mine and Nharingo was owning a house, he said he would apply for  a loan with CBZ and Nharingo will then cede his house to the bank as collateral so that  Makuvise would obtain the money for the company.

Makuvise again allegedly lied after receiving the money from the bank that Nharingo would get 50% of production made at the mine.

Makuvise applied for the loan and Nharingo ceded his house as surety and the two were given the loan. Unfortunately, the loan was deposited into Makuvise's account and he converted the money to his own use.

As a result, Nharingo was prejudiced of US$17 000 and it was not recovered.

Makuvise was ordered to appear in court on December 12.
