Karo Mining on track to begin platinum ore milling by 2025

Karo Mining Holdings is upbeat about producing the first Platinum Group Metals ore for milling within the next two years.

Initial indications had placed the first ore mill at Karo Mining Holdings for June next year, before uncertain global prices on Platinum Group Metals forced changes to the timelines, according to earlier communication by officials at the parent company, Tharisa Group.

Even as the Platinum Group basket is currently weak, the firm is optimistic about implementing its plans by the second quarter of 2025, according to a position presented to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development by Karo Resources during a ministerial tour of its plant this Tuesday.

Honourable Polite Kambamura said: “They have started massive drilling and exploration. So far, they have drilled 488 holes which is about 53 kilometres on the surface. The company has also opened a 15-year open pit project and is currently engaged in a pilot open pit mining project. We are looking forward to the company putting the first ore to mill by 2025.”

Karo Mining Holdings plans to process 2.5 metric tonnes of platinum ore annually at its Mhondoro-Ngezi Plant.

“Construction is currently on the go. We have a view of having the project commissioned by 2025,” said Karo Resources Country Manager, Dr Josephat Zimba.

The country hosts the second-largest platinum deposits after South Africa.

The government is prioritising capital projects in the mining sector as one of the key anchors to support the country’s economic growth.
