A Member of Parliament has said that there should be a three tier price range for passports to accommodate the disadvantaged.
''Passport fees should be put into three tiers; those who want the document as a national document and are ready to wait for even three or more months to get it for free because they are poor; those who want the passport like yesterday get it on increased fee and those who can afford but not in hurry, can get the passport using the current fee.,” said Gutu South legislator and Zanu PF chief whip in Parliament, Pupurai Togarepi.
Hon Togarepi was speaking during a Parliamentary debate on the proposed 2024 National Budget presented by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube.
Ncube’s proposed $80 hike to set the charge at $200 has sparked widespread complaints. If passed, it would make Zimbabwe passports more than 500% above the regional average.
A number of social media users agreed with Hon. Togarepi’s position.
“This is how representatives speak: offering ideas, backing them up. People can relate and say I voted for that,” posted

”On point, I actually made enquiries today for a 3 months passport only to be told that there are only 2 options, 7 days or 3 days and the cost that come with it. I think it is unfair for me to be compelled to pay for either of those options when I am not in a hurry,” said @HalimaniDenford.
”My submission is $20 Ordinary $80 for 7 days $120 for a 3 day passport. Poor people may also gave emergencies that require their presence abroad,” posted @wzvawanda
