“It might be Christmas Day but Harare municipal police will not stop working to bring order to the city. Today, they raided a man who had set up a makeshift barber shop near Chisipiti Shopping Centre, tweeted City of Harare head of corporate communication Stanley Gama.
Most social media users who responded were neither impressed nor amused.
“Mukoma Stanley, aita munyama barber guy uyo…. Otherwise the city has lots of disorder… the municipal police would rather collect bribes than enforce the law…. Lots of work needed to make Harare orderly….,” wrote Jacob Mutisi.
Several others agreed with the sentiment that the municipality has failed to deal with, and is complicit in the chaos that now defines the capital city as illegal vendors and other operators just set up shop where they wish.
“Residents should report any illegal operations & the city will take action,” said Gama.
Challenged on lawless hoodlums who have set up base along the Seke Rd Flyover that snatch wigs and caps from unwary pedestrians, Gama said he would notify the relevant authorities to look into it.
Harare is said to have almost 70 000 unlicensed vendors operating from undesignated points.
