Chitungwiza Municipality has ordered house-owners to provide weep holes on perimeter walls on their properties within 24 hours.
This comes following rising cases of flooding of houses in Harare’s dormitory town in the wake of heavy rains that have been pounding the country lately.
Chitungwiza Acting Town Clerk, Japson Nemuseso, in a notice yesterday said failure to provide weep holes will result in council destroying the perimeter walls.
Alternatively, council will put weep holes on the properties at the house-owner’s cost.
‘Notice is hereby given that you must immediately provide weep holes on your perimeter wall at the front, back and sides according to chapter 2 part 4 of section (40) and Chapter (5) Section (26) of the Modern Buildings BY LAW which regulates construction of perimeter walls with weep holes, the Water Act (Chapter 20:24 Section (78) (2) which regulates the free passage of water, and the Roads Act (Chapter 13:18) Section 46(2) which prohibits the construction of structures which encroach into road servitudes,” reads part of the notice from the local authority.
Heavy rains have been falling across the country, leading to flooding in various parts.
