United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Dr Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda Deputy Executive Director for Normative Support, United Nations System Coordination and Programme Results at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women by.
UN Women Director, Policy, Programme and Intergovernmental Support, Sarah Hendriks of Canada, will continue to serve as UN Women Deputy Executive Director ad interim, until Dr Gumbonzvanda undertakes her functions.
Dr Gumbonzvanda is the Founder and Executive Director for Rozaria Memorial Trust.
She has served as the General Secretary of the World Young Women's Christian Association and United Nations Development Fund for Women Regional Programming Director in the East and Horn of Africa.
She has also served in the United Nations Children’s Fund as the Human Rights Officer in Liberia and National Child Rights Adviser in Zimbabwe. Before joining Unicef, she served as the Interim Coordinator for the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association and Assistant Law Officer at the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Constitutional Affairs of Zimbabwe.
She is the first President from the global south to serve on the NGO Committee on the Status of Women.
She was appointed a member of the High-Level Group on HIV Prevention and Sexual Health for Young People in Eastern and Southern Africa by the United Nations; following her service as a member of the UN Commission on Information and Accountability on Women and Children’s Health.
In May 2014, she was named Goodwill Ambassador of the African Union Campaign to End Child Marriage.
She served on many civil Boards including CIVICUS and Save the Children UK and is the current Chair of Action Aid International.
Dr Gumbonzvanda holds a law Doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, USA, a law Masters from the University of South Africa, Post Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation from the Uppsala University, Sweden, and a Law degree from the University of Zimbabwe.
