Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius may have to sweep floors and park the congregation’s cars at his local church as part of his parole deal.
Sweeping floors or valet parking
Some of the options included helping clean a local hospital, auxiliary duties at a police station or a return to prison to help warders with maintenance.
The source revealed that Pistorius is leaning towards assisting at the NG Kerk Dutch Reformed Church, which is not too far from from his uncle Arnold Pistorius’ house – located in the upmarket Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof.
The church, which both Arnold and his wife Lois are members, has about 1 000 congregants.
“One concern is that Oscar does not have to travel far to carry out his community service as any fares that have to be met will come out of the South African public funds.
“The church is close to Arnold’s home and he is a regular face there on Sunday mornings so Oscar will feel welcome there.
“He could sweep the floors or be given a yellow bib to help direct cars to parking areas as it gets very busy on Sunday mornings,” said the source.
Oscar Pistorius’ parole conditions
The world-famous double amputee runner has served eight years behind bars for the murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
Before his release last week, the Department of Correctional Services’ spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, explained that Pistorius would be restricted from conducting media interviews.
Nxumalo also said the 37-year-old will be expected to be home at particular hours of the day and may not consume alcohol or other prohibited substances.
Additionally, he is expected to undergo therapy for anger and gender-based violence issues. He will be assigned a monitoring official, whom he has to inform when he is seeking job opportunities or moving homes.
Pistorius will be subjected to these conditions until the end of his sentence in 2029. – The South African
