A group of opposition Citizens Coalition for Change councillors representing a faction linked to party leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday attempted to push a vote of no confidence against Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume but failed.
In a move that is seemingly in defiance of Chamisa, the majority of opposition councillors voted against the no-confidence motion.
The motion, which was tabled by councillor Blessing Duma and seconded by Jakopo Chibaba, was only supported by four councillors.
The Ward 17 councillor survived with majority support.
Mafume bounced back as Harare Mayor after defeating councillor Elvis Ruzani, who was the preferred candidate of CCC Chamisa, who had been handpicked during the party’s internal caucus meeting.
Mayor Mafume pulled 22 votes against Clr Ruzani’s 15 while Zanu PF’s Temany Utete received 4 votes in a hotly contested poll to reclaim Harare’s Mayoral seat.
Due to the incessant fights within the opposition, which run the capital city, the government has been contemplating on installing a commission to oversee Harare.
The appointed commission would replace the elected council under the pretext of uprooting confusion, incompetence, and corruption in the Harare City Council.
