Bulawayo Mayor, David Coltart, said he will be prioritising his trusted advisors, the elders of his church and his family’s views regarding the way forward on whether to resign from office and follow former Citizens’ Coalition for Change leader, Nelson Chamisa, who dumped the party last week, or to remain at work.
Chamisa resigned as Citizens Coalition for Change president, citing a number of issues, including the alleged 2023 electoral fraud and interference of Zanu PF with his party.
His decision came after Sengenzo Tshabangu, who says he is the party’s interim secretary-general, recalled dozens of legislators and councillors who were aligned to Chamisa, saying they had ceased to be CCC members.
Some legislators have announced that they had dumped the party to follow Chamisa although they still have to walk their talk by resigning from the National Assembly.
Asked about his plan, Coltart said he was still consulting his constituents on the way forward.
“I am still consulting a broad cross range of those who elected me, the residents of the great city of Bulawayo, trusted advisors, the elders of my church, and, of course, my family.
“I will issue a clear statement regarding my intentions before next week. In essence, my focus is on those I am directly responsible to,” he posted on X.
Many on his X timeline called for him to stay put and remain as Bulawayo Mayor.
Meanwhile, Fadzayi Mahere has since written to the National Assembly, announcing her decision to resign as Mt Pleasant MP.
CCC senator Vongai Tome also declared that she will be following Chamisa’s new political strategy.
A number of MPs are, however, still undecided on the way forward. They claim that Chamisa caught them by surprise when he resigned.
