The battle for promotion from the Eastern Region Soccer League has taken a dramatic turn, potentially delaying the start of the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season. Tenax FC, who finished top of the log standings, have appealed Bikita Minerals’ promotion via a boardroom decision, throwing the entire process into disarray.
Bikita Minerals were initially awarded three points after their final league game against Grayham, who fielded an ineligible player. This pushed them past Tenax in the final standings, securing their promotion to the top flight. However, Tenax bypassed the ERSL’s appeals process and directly approached the Zifa Appeals Committee, lodging a complaint against the boardroom decision.
Zifa’s decision to entertain Tenax’s appeal has created significant controversy. The ERSL argues that Tenax did not follow proper protocol by neglecting their internal appeals process. Additionally, questions have been raised about Tenax’s initial silence on the matter and their decision to directly approach Zifa.
With the Zifa Appeals Committee hearing set for February 16th, just a week before the planned season start, major disruptions are looming. If Tenax’s appeal is successful, it could necessitate a fixture reshuffle and venue confirmations, throwing the league’s preparations into disarray.
The situation has exposed a clear division within the footballing authorities. The ERSL expressed strong reservations about Zifa’s intervention, questioning its adherence to established procedures. Meanwhile, Tenax believes they have a legitimate case and are exercising their right to appeal.
The Zifa Appeals Committee’s decision on February 16th will be crucial in determining the fate of the 2024 PSL season. Whether Bikita Minerals retain their promotion or Tenax emerges victorious remains to be seen. This saga highlights the need for clearer and more consistent protocols within Zimbabwean football to avoid similar confusion and potential delays in the future.
