Zimbabwe’s airports are now operating normally following a bomb and firearm threat that caused a brief scare on Friday.

The threat, received via email from an anonymous sender using the pseudonym “John Doe”, prompted heightened security measures and the cancellation of a presidential trip.

Authorities assured the public that all airports, including Victoria Falls International Airport, are operating safely.

Tawanda Gusha, CEO of the Airports Company of Zimbabwe, emphasised that security services have taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of passengers.

“(The) airports are operating, including the Victoria Falls International Airport.

“We want to assure our stakeholders and all those using airports that the security services have taken all precautions to ensure that the travelling public is safe,” Gusha told The Herald.

The email, sent through fastjet Airlines, claimed to have credible information about a potential attack.

While the source and validity of the threat are still under investigation, the government urged the nation to remain calm.

Presidential spokesperson, George Charamba confirmed that security systems are on high alert and investigations are ongoing. He reiterated that all possible measures are being taken to ensure public safety and that the results of the investigation will be made public once complete.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, originally scheduled to attend a meeting in Victoria Falls, had to abort his trip to allow for the investigation to proceed unobstructed.
