Govt Pushes Agro-Ecological Tailoring for Food Security

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Obert Jiri, has underscored the importance of aligning crop production with regional ecological conditions to safeguard national food security.

“Agro-ecological tailoring is the path to food security in a changing climate. Tailoring crops to each region keeps Zimbabwe’s food systems strong,” Jiri said, reinforcing government’s push for climate-smart agriculture.

The remarks reflect a growing emphasis on region-specific cropping models as Zimbabwe confronts climate variability, recurrent droughts and shifting rainfall patterns.

Under the agro-ecological approach, crop choices are matched to rainfall zones, soil types and temperature conditions — a strategy aimed at improving yields, reducing input losses and enhancing resilience across farming communities.

The call aligns with national efforts to strengthen climate adaptation frameworks and promote sustainable food production amid increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.
