Local authorities have been called upon to adopt sustainable procurement practices, which are critical in ensuring economic development and enhancing transparency.

The Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe is engaging local authorities on the importance of integrating environmental, social and economic considerations into procurement processes.

Speaking on the sidelines of an engagement in Masvingo, PRAZ chief executive officer, Clever Ruswa said local authorities are the key drivers of devolution, hence they must create a more equitable and inclusive procurement landscape.

“We have brought the necessary guidance and skills to empower you in your roles as procurement practitioners, town planners, engineers, and environmental health and safety personnel. Together, we can create an environment that fosters excellence, transparency, and integrity in public procurement.”

The government urged local authorities to create communities that are resilient, inclusive and vibrant through sustainable procurement.

Masvingo Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa said: “Some of our major aims are to provide our citizens with safe and accessible infrastructure, clean and renewable energy sources, and efficient waste management systems. All this can be achieved through sustainable procurement practices.”

Local authorities acknowledged the importance of prioritising environmentally friendly products and services for sustainable growth.

“Through sustainable procurement, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also supporting local businesses and promoting innovation,” said Makoni Rural District Council CEO, Dr Edward Pise.

This comes after the government launched the electronic Government Procurement system, which has transformed the landscape of procurement processes in Zimbabwe.
